Wednesday Words
We will look at the words that define us.
Many of you are familiar with Jean Piaget. If you aren’t yet, don’t worry I’ll introduce you. Unfortunately he died in 1980 so you’ll have to settle for an introduction to his work. Piaget is one of the major names in education theory. He developed many theories on how children learn that we still use. While learning about his theories you will hear many terms that can be confusing. In the next couple of Wednesday Words posts we will talk about them.
Let’s start with the word schema. These are the little bits of knowledge that a child acquires. I like to think about them almost like little web pages. Each page stands independently of each other. As a website begins to grow and add more information more schema are needed. Some of the pages on the website are connected, just as a child learns to connect some of the related knowledge they acquire.
We will talk about how the children can add to or change these schema in the next couple of weeks. Until then do you have any questions about Piaget you’d like answered?
