Wednesday Words- Developmental Milestones

Wednesday Words

We will look at the words that define us.

milestones

We often talk about “developmental milestones” with parents.  We compare how the children in our care are progressing toward these milestones and often create experiences that will help children meet these milestones.

The idea with these milestones is to give caregivers and idea of what a child should be doing during a specific age range.  Milestones tend to build on one another from a basic skill to a more complex skill.

I have to admit, I took for granted these milestones before I became a parent.  As a parent of a preemie I’ve made quite a few inquiries to my friends in the infant field to make sure my little one is on track.  I have learned through these inquiries that preemies are often adjusted to their gestational age.

Keep in mind that as educators we cannot diagnose children, but we can direct parents to more resources if we believe they need further evaluation.
