Mindful Monday
This is where each Monday we are mindful of our pedagogy, slowly adjusting our lessons to match our theories.
I wanted to share another classroom DIY I did last year. I needed some extra flexible seating for my room and thought I would try the crate seating that everyone has been making the past few years. Let me tell you, it was easy peasy!
I bought the crate super cheap at WalMart during their back to school sales. I also got the fabric and padding from WalMart. When I compared prices I found that a twin sheet set was actually cheaper than comparable amounts of fabric from the fabric section. I even have some left over for repairs down the road. The particle board I had cut at Home Depot when I bought it. The guy was super helpful when I explained what I wanted done. I even brought in one of the crates and he kept cutting until it fit just right and only charged me for the pieces that worked out. Score one for teachers!
My kids loved using these last year. They were stationed in my listening center, but they made their way around the room depending on where groups were congregating.
I’ve been thinking about ways to make my book center more inviting for leisure reading. While I like a bean bag chair, I find that they make quite a bit of noise and it takes the kids a while to get comfortable in them. While shopping for other things I came upon a great idea….
Dog beds! They are the perfect size for preschoolers and kindergarteners. They are also sturdier than the seating we usually use for them. I haven’t found a pattern I love yet, but I am still looking. Home Goods has a big variety that seems to always be changing so I’m hoping to find one I love before long.
What interesting seating do you use?
